The Building of Stronger MSLs

Medical Science Liaisons (MSLs) are critical in bridging the gap between scientific innovation and healthcare professionals by delivering expert insights on disease education, clinical trial data, and information on the efficacy and safety of the medication they represent. According to our latest independent research, healthcare specialists express the highest satisfaction with MSLs when they offer in-depth scientific knowledge and keep physicians updated on the latest clinical trial results.

However, the findings reveal gaps in value-added services, particularly in Canada, where satisfaction rates are lower. MSLs have a significant opportunity to differentiate themselves by supporting physician-sponsored clinical trials and speaker programs – two services where satisfaction levels are notably lower.

From a competitive standpoint, AbbVie MSLs lead in dermatology, rheumatology, and gastroenterology across both Canada and the US, driven by high visit rates and perceived effectiveness. In endocrinology, Novo Nordisk performs best in Canada, while Eli Lilly leads in the US; most probably because of their respective product Ozempic and Mounjaro. Meanwhile, Merck MSLs stand out in hematology, while AstraZeneca leads in respiratory medicine across both countries.

As the healthcare landscape evolves, MSLs who deliver scientific expertise while addressing unmet needs in value-added services will strengthen their partnerships with healthcare professionals and drive better patient outcomes.
